Record Store Day is this Saturday, April 18th, and I guess you could say we are all pretty excited. There's a number of limited, new, and exceptional re-releases making their way to record stores this weekend, and we've outlined just a few that we're looking forward to. It helps that our team is based in Chicago, where a Reckless Records is always within reach, Laurie's Planet of Sound can be found on the north side, and a smattering of vinyl shops speckle the streets in between.

Picaresque - The Decemberists
10th anniversary pressing on red vinyl.
The new pressing of Picaresque brings up a lot of nostalgic feelings for me. I vividly remember the moment when I was introduced to the Decemberists through this album. It was junior year of high school, and my friend gave me a CD that she had burned and inscribed with all the track titles in Sharpie, with big asterisks by all her favorites. Ten years later, blank CDs are all but extinct; the Decemberists’ entire discography is available for free on Spotify; and that high school friend recently got engaged. I’m looking forward to experiencing this album for the first time once again, to relive all those memories from so long ago and begin to make new memories for the next ten years.

Limited-run EP on white, yellow, and green vinyl.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Clouds Taste Metallic, The Flaming Lips are releasing three limited-run 10” EPs from the album’s recording sessions: Bad Days, This Here Giraffe, and Brainville. Clouds Taste Metallic is one of my favorite albums, so I’m really looking forward to these releases, the Bad Days 10” in particular. It features three demo versions of some of my favorite tracks and one that was not included on the album. Plus it’s pressed on solid white vinyl with a mix of transparent yellow and green, so it’ll be as fun to look at as it is to listen to.

Get Behind Me Satan - The White Stripes
In honor of the tenth anniversary of the Grammy-Award winning album, The White Stripes is releasing the first commercially-available version of the album as a 180-gram double LP. It artfully demonstrates Jack White's versatility as a musician in his ability to trade in his electric guitar for piano, mandolin, and acoustic guitar. The result is a fresh, rhythmic set of songs that reinvent the The White Stripes sound.
The LP features disc one pressed on red vinyl with disc two pressed on white vinyl and includes a full-size, 12” x 12”, gatefold lenticular jacket (below). Newly-created inner artwork reprising themes of the original promo-only version of the Satan LP will be exclusive to this release, and an MP3 download code will be included.
Phish - New Year's Eve 1995 Live at Madison Square Garden
I would have figured on outgrowing Phish, never-ending guitar solos, and nonsensical lyrics. But I haven't. The band's New Year's set 1995 is pretty much the only album I listened to in high school, front-to-back-and-back again. It's an unreasonably great live album, and it's downright funky. The setlist takes you through the band's Gamehendge Time Factory tales, and includes (my favorite), "Colonel Forbin's Ascent." Another trip through Yesterday could be fun—I'll definitely be on the lookout for this one.
